VENDOR SPOTLIGHT:: ALEX STRAUS, MIXOLOGIST
September 23, 2011

There are many aspects to weddings and events and all are very important. But if you really want to wow your guests have a mixologist create some tasty beverages. One of the best in the industry is Alex Straus of The Cocktail Consultant. Straus has created cocktails for venues such as the famed Tao Night Club and Tao Beach in Las Vegas, Eva Longoria’s restaurant Beso Hollywood, the Hotel Shangri La in Santa Monica and now Hemingway’s Lounge in Hollywood. He was also recently named the L.A. Ambassador for The Bon Vivants.
We interviewed Straus to get more insight on mixology and what he recommends.
What is a mixologist?
Mixology is a skill in my estimation, it is the ability to make ‘fancy cocktails’, but be warned, anyone touting to be a ‘master mixologist’ probably has no idea how to make people feel welcome and appreciated.

What are the benefits of having a mixologist at your event?
By having a mixologist at your event you will bring a level of class, sophistication, appreciation of quality and attention to detail that will not go unnoticed.

What do you recommend for a great fall drink?
I love fall flavors: apple, pumpkin and spice all work great with many different spirits. Use what is in season to get the best results.
What would you recommend for a wedding cocktail hour?
Every wedding I have done we create cocktails made exclusively for that particular wedding. The family’s ethnicity, food being served and a favorite spirit of the bride and groom all come into play. A lot of attention is given to the bride and groom’s tastes when compiling a list for a wedding. My clients always enjoy the tastings leading up to the big day. It seems to be the one thing both the bride and groom enjoy doing together in the planning process!

What is a simple Do-It-Yourself cocktail recipe?
I love a fresh gimlet for the at home cocktail maker. The recipe is simple:
2 oz of your favorite spirit
1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1 oz simple syrup (50/50 water and sugar)
add ice, shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass

Cocktail Mixing Parties (where you teach guests to mix their own cocktails) are great for all types of parties. Bridal showers, birthdays, housewarmings, etc… Are you available for these types of events?
I always am! I have actually done a few parties like that in the past and it is a lot of fun for everyone, both educational and a party!
We had a fantastic time with Alex and hope you enjoyed learning about mixology. Make sure you have a mixologist at your next event to leave your guests wanting more.
*A mixologist can make any of these tasty beverages non-alcoholic!
Whole heartedly,
Heather
