Make Your Spring Cleaning Last All Year

When springtime rolls around, everyone wants to greet the season differently. Some crave picnics and hikes and the outdoor activities they’ve been missing during the colder months. Some want to get their garden ready for a beautiful season of growth. And some see it as a time for a seasonal refresh in their home with some spring cleaning.

There’s no wrong way to enjoy the spring but if you want to get your space feeling reset, tidy, and organized, we’re going to share with you some secrets to make your spring cleaning last.

Declutter

So many people struggle with clutter. Half of Americans feel they have a cluttered space in their home that is unsalvageable so to avoid getting to that point it’s important to declutter.

A great way to start this process is to make a list of areas that overwhelm you because of the clutter. It may sound scary but find the one that is effecting you the most and start there.

This is going to be a process, so don’t try to tackle every space in one day. Decluttering can be tiring. Take breaks and split the project up over a few days. But make sure you finish it.

Once you’ve identified which space you’re starting in, the first step is to take everything out. Pull items out one by one and ask yourself, “When was the last time i used this?”

If the answer is days ago or weeks ago, hold on to it. The answer is months ago, assess why you’re going months between uses of this item. If the answer is closer to a year or more, be tough on yourself and ask yourself, “will I ever use this item again?”

Once you’ve gone through your questions on an item, put it into a pile based on the category of item that it is.

Reassess your storage

The reason we want to pull everything out is because it’s important to see the everything you’re planning on storing. This is going to help you make a game plan for putting it away.

There’s a chance that the way you were storing it is perfectly fine but don’t assume that’s true. There might be a better option!

Take time and do some research. Head to Google Images and search ‘organized kitchens‘, ‘organized closets‘, ‘organized garages‘, etc. This is an excellent way to be inspired to change and put new solutions in place.

Once you are inspired by the way others have organized their spaces it’s time to make it work for yours.

Bring out your trusty tape measure! Take full measurements of the entire space you’re working on.

Now that you have the measurements of your space and your new-found inspiration, let’s put them to use. Whether you’re buying new products to use or using products you have, you want to review the item’s dimensions to make sure it will fit properly in the space you’re aiming to organize. After all, we want solutions, not more problems.

Maintain Your Work

This is the real secret right here, and I’m sorry to say some people won’t like it.

Once you’ve done all the work to declutter and reassess your storage, you have to keep it up. If you don’t have the discipline to put things back into their designated space when you’re done using them, your space will never stay organized.

Organization is a practice and needs to be done every day. It gets easier with time and systems, but ultimately, it always comes down to you doing the work when it needs to be done.

So go out there and make this years spring cleaning last all year!
